As part of its research activities within subproject A04, Umut Demir is investigating the model-based and data-driven control allocation algorithms for highly integrated transport aircraft concepts with distributed propulsion. In distributed propulsion systems, the number of actuators and actuation variables is likely to increase, resulting in redundant actuators being available.

Each actuator generates a force that is nonlinearly dependent on the flight state, and there are couplings between actuators, such as between adjacent propellers and between propellers and control surfaces. Consequently, the mapping from actuation to force and torque becomes multivariable, nonlinear, and uncertain.
